格莱美奖拿到手软的John Mayer，已经对流行音乐掌握到了一定程度。第四张正式专辑《Battle Studies》当中，John Mayer更多地把玩起了原声乐器，浅吟低唱代替了花样繁多的风格转换，这也是一位不置于演唱的流行乐手在尝试多种可能性的行动，由流行摇滚到布鲁斯，再到这张偏于乡村民谣甚至是迷幻音乐的新作，John Mayer的每一次尝试都谨小慎微，却又成效卓著。
专辑当中最早曝光的单曲《Half Of My Heart》明显地标注着是与Taylor Swift合作的曲目，但寥寥几句合唱并未能满足乐迷的需求，不过专辑开场曲《Heartbreak Warfare》则因为之前John Mayer透露说是写给前女友的一首歌，因而所得到的关注并不亚于《Half Of My Heart》，旋律和节奏上，这首歌都没有什么可挑剔之处，飘扬的人声是它的最大优点，《Who Says》的简单让人直面歌词，也是专辑当中歌词寓意最贴近John Mayer内心的一曲。
至于专辑当中两首翻唱作品《Crossroads》和《I'm on Fire》，分别翻唱自Robert Johnson和Bruce Springsteen，《Crossroads》当中电音吉他的缓慢拨弄，也同样有原声吉他的效果，作为隐藏曲目的《I'm on Fire》则只收录在iTunes下载版本的这张专辑里。
