Listening and speaking
Changing Eliza
By Dong Guan Senior High School—Ma XiaoFang
I.      Teaching objectives:
1. Get the students to know the general idea of the listening materials and catch some of the details .
2. Improve the students’ oral English by a series of speaking activities.
3. Improve the students’ spirit of team cooperation and the ability of organizing information.
II. Teaching key & difficult points
Key points: Catch the main idea of the listening material and practice speaking.
Difficult points: Enable the students to compete and raise their
sense of participation and self-confidence through cooperation.
III. Teaching methods : Listening and cooperative learning
IV. Teaching aids:  A computer and a projector
V. Teaching procedures:
1.     Lead-in:  Talk about different Chinese dialects and make the students know the importance of speaking Mandarin in Chinese and standard English, and then lead to the topic——Changing Eliza.
2.     Warming up: Let the students discuss in groups and make a list:
What will you do to change Eliza into a fair lady?
3.      Listening: Task 1: Give the students two questions about the listening material before listening, and check their answers.
Task 2: Fill in the missing wordsin sentences.
4.     Speaking: Task 1: One student asks questions according to Chinese prompt, while the others give answers.
Task 2: Give the students several topics to discuss and have a competition.
Task 3: Team work. Find a partner to make a dialogue about the listening materials with the help of some functional phrases to express
Conjecture, judgement and evaluation.
Task 4: Ask the students to retell the listening material according to some key words. Then read some tongue twisters to practice their pronunciation.
VI. Summary: Encourage the students to summarize what they have learnt today by reminding them of some procedures.
VII. Homework:
1. Make out a short play about the second lesson Professor Higgins will give Eliza.
2. Try to find more tongue twisters and practice them after class.
